Working Practice

I work both in the studio and outdoors, the latter especially in the Dorset countryside. These paintings explore the intimate places found in nature; parks, rivers and hillsides and the particular gestural painted qualities that describe the light and space in this type of environment. They are painted until the point at which no more description is needed, and the idea and emotion have been communicated to the viewer.

My studio practice involves working from drawings and photographs from places I have visited or images that inspire me. I use them as a trigger for the imagination and believe in the alchemical creative process of letting the paint and ‘accidents’ have their own voice in the development of the final piece.

I like to use drawing to help develop ideas for my work, and also find that it can express the essence of an idea quickly in a few lines.  I have found that drawing from the masters can help me to learn more about structure, composition, light and mark making and develop new interests. It is also a very good exercise for observational drawing. Although I do not wish to do work in the style of the masters, drawing from them can help to find ideas to bring into my personal work, and  also help to convey ideas for my teaching .

I trained in Fine Art at Glasgow School of Art, and was awarded the Mary Armour prize for painting. Since then I have continued to draw and paint and use my passion for shape, colour, pattern, and composition across many disciplines; including graphic design for web, print, exhibitions and textiles.

I have experience working as a graphic designer in particular with layout, colour palettes, and identities for start up businesses.  Previous employers also include both small design agencies and larger in-house companies.

Colour is of a particular interest to me. I obtained a diploma in colour psychology from Angela Wright at colour affects, and have freelanced for the colour consultancy in:colour. In my work I continue to enjoy exploring colour palettes and interesting colour combinations. Having studied both graphic design and fine art, my ideas are often inspired by both disciplines especially when depicting a particular mood, building an identity, or deciding on a composition.
