I work both in the studio and outdoors, the latter especially in the Dorset countryside. My paintings explore the intimate places found in nature; parks, rivers and hillsides and the particular gestural painted qualities that describe the light and space in this type of environment. They are painted until the point at which no more description is needed, and the idea and emotion have been communicated to the viewer.
My studio practice involves working from drawings and photographs from places I have visited or images that inspire me. I use them as a trigger for the imagination and believe in the alchemical creative process of letting the paint and ‘accidents’ have their own voice in the development of the final piece.
